Trey Mitchell Makes Lasting Impression with a Third Place Finish in the PASS South-Easter Bunny 150
There was no question Texas native Trey Mitchell was ready to get his 2012 racing season started. After having not raced since last November Mitchell piloted his #47 Mangum’s Oilfield Service Ford Fusion to a third place finish in the PASS South Series’ Easter Bunny 150 at the Hickory Motor Speedway.
Mitchell took the green flag from the ninth position after qualifying sixth due to the series redraw of the top ten qualifiers. From there the youngster wasted no time making his way within the top five front runners battling for the lead. Just past the 150 lap event’s halfway point Trey had made his way to the outside of the front row for a chance at the lead. He powered by the outside of eventual winner Kyle Grissom to lead a pair of laps before settling back into the runner up spot. With the leader out front Mitchell did his best to make his #47 Ford Fusion as wide as he could to hold on to the position, but with three laps to go fellow competitor Landon Cling snuck by forcing the third place finish on the Trey Mitchell Racing team.
“I thought I may have finally got my chance at a win tonight and what a win it would have been winning the Easter Bunny race here at Hickory. My car was on a rail early on and made it to the front pretty easily, but the #31 (Kyle Grissom) had more than we did at the end,” said Mitchell. “A third place finish isn’t anything to be discouraged about especially with the talent in this field tonight. I just really want to win one of these races bad. I have to thank all my guys that helped me out this weekend and Crooks Racing for giving us a car capable of racing for the win.”
Over the off season officials from Trey Mitchell Racing spent time making calls and working on deals to possibly drive for others to fill on their partial 2012 PASS South Series schedule. After this past weekend’s third place finish in one of the biggest super late model races in the country, the PASS South Easter Bunny 150 at the Hickory Motor Speedway, Mitchell hopes maybe his efforts will catch the right person’s eyes going forward.
“I really hope we can fill some races in on our schedule this year. We have enough funding to run the seven PASS races we already have scheduled, but at this stage of my career I think it’s important to get as much experience behind the wheel as possible no matter what type of racing it is,” explained the twenty-two year old Mitchell. “I think I could help a team out and give them a good run if I got the chance. Regardless we’ll keep plugging away and keep pounding the pavement to see what happens.”
The next scheduled race as of now for the Trey Mitchell Racing team is almost two full months away on Saturday June 9th as the PASS South Series “Bad Boys with the Bad Fast Toys” invades the South Boston Speedway in South Boston, Virginia for the Southern Virginia 150.
