Devin Jones Races His Way to 4th at Hickory Motor Speedway
Devin Jones landed his first Late Model Stock top five finish on Saturday, July 9, during the 100-lap Bojangles Late Model division race at Hickory Motor Speedway.
Driving his No. 35 Hedgcock, Jones and the Devin Jones Racing (DJR) team showed that they will quickly be in winning contention at the historic track.
Jones put down the fastest lap in the first qualifying group. The track cooled down a little between sessions, putting Jones in the sixth spot once qualifying was complete.
“I was happy with our starting spot and was looking forward to racing for 100 laps, rather than 50,” said Jones. “I like the longer runs because I have good experience with tire management. I knew I could move forward while saving my tires for the end.”
That’s just was Jones did. At the start, he battled for position, even racing at one point three-wide in turns 3 and 4. The tire pressures were low for the first 15 laps, but once they got up to temperature, Jones made his move into fifth. Soon afterwards, he made the move into fourth. This is where he stayed for the remainder of the caution-free race, breaking away from the pack battling for fifth behind him as he worked to run down the top three cars.
“It was a good run for us and I know we have the speed to get a top three here at Hickory very soon,” said Jones. “I’m confident we’ll be on the podium in no time. I really like running the NASCAR Whelen All-America Series because NASCAR does a good job at creating level playing field with consistent tech. It’s a fantastic series.”
Jones will continue to run at Hickory Motor Speedway this season as team DJR and its crew chief Tom Buzze ready themselves to compete at the Virginia Is for Racing Lovers 300 Late Model Event at Martinsville Speedway in October.
Jones would like to thank his crew chief, Tom, at Tom Buzze Racing and the DJR crew.
