Turlington Claims Victory in an Exciting Toyota of Easley 150
After a strong shower, UARA officials and even some drivers spend the afternoon drying off the track. By mid-evening, it was clear skies and race time at Anderson Motor Speedway for the Toyota of Easley 150.
Sunoco Pole winner, Scott Turlington broke his own track record for the UARA-STARS at Anderson with a 15.579 second lap. During the 2011 August visit to Anderson, he set the record with a 15.651 lap. Turlington set the pace leading the first 57 laps. Rookie Sean Rayhall took the lead from Turlington on lap 58 and remained there until lap73. Rayhall, who is familiar with the track according to his racing resume, began lapping the field with only 40 laps to go. At lap 75 local hero Ralph Carnes made the pass on Rayhall and put on a great show for his fans. Carnes led until lap 105 at which point Rayhall made the move and regained the lead. Rayhall maintained the lead thru lap 120 and then along comes fellow Rookie contender Devin Jones. Jones would hold the lead for 18 laps but after getting a love tap from fellow rookie driver Jones, Rayhall began to slip back into the field and spun in turn two for the final caution. Rayhall was awarded ARBodies Hard Luck Award for his misfortune. Ronnie Bassett Jr. made his charge to the front at this time.
Turlington was coming back strong in the closing laps of the race putting some serious pressure on Bassett before the final caution flew . During the green-white-checkered, Turlington turned on the heat for race leader Bassett crossing the finish line a mere 0.140 seconds behind Bassett who took the checker. After post race inspection, Bassett was DQ'd and Turlington would inherit the win of the Toyota of Easley 150 giving him his career first UARA victory.
Rules infractions on the Ronnie Bassett, Jr. car were: (1) Pg 41 no. 22. No Ducts air directing or baffling shall be permitted from behind the front spindles to the trailing edge of the rear and (2.) Rookie of the Race, Devin Jones ran his best race with the UARA-STARS to date and brought home a second place finish. After qualifying second, he never fell out of the top five during the entire race. Jones picked the perfect time to blossom as his sponsor, VeriStor, brought over 65 employees from Atlanta to support their young driver.
Along with Jones and Turlington, Travis Swaim was in the leading pack. The current points leader qualified fourth and only fell as far back as fifth position. With this third place finish, he will continue his points lead as the STARS head to their next event at Newport Speedway on June 16. Rounding out the top five were rookies Trey Marcham and Holley Performer of the Race Dillon Bassett. Both rookies raced clean throughout the entire race and gained at least ten positions a piece.
Tim George Jr. was awarded Pigwire’s Electrifying Move of the Race after he managed to save his loose race car coming out of turn two on lap 121. He had stated before the event that his car was loose coming off the turns.
In addition to a great night of racing, UARA-STARS would like to give a huge thanks to Toyota of Easley for sponsoring the event. Much appreciation also goes to VeriStor and Borg Warner for their support. Borg Warner who was hosting an employee night at the races posted two $1500 bonuses on the event. If the two drivers would have won, Julia Dawson and Scott Bishop would have been $1500 richer. Dawson was selected for the bonus by being the only female in the field and Bishop won the random draw during the pit party.
