Trey Mitchell Tests Dirt Super Late Model for Perry Brown’s Innovative Suspensions Race Team
Texas native Trey Mitchell now residing in Concord, North Carolina took the track for the first time in 2012 after a long off season from behind the wheel.
This test session however wasn’t behind the wheel of his familiar #47 Trey Mitchell Racing pavement super late model that fans of the PASS South series are accustom to seeing; instead it was behind the wheel of the #22 Innovative Suspensions Rocket Chassis dirt super late model owned by Florida native Perry Brown.
The recent February 10th test session took place at the 4/10th mile Carolina Speedway located in Gastonia , North Carolina behind the wheel of an 800 horsepower dirt super late model that competes under Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model and World of Outlaw Late Model series rules.
“I got out of the car and the first thing I said was “that was stupid”. I couldn’t believe how awesome it was to be behind the wheel of one of these things with that much horsepower at your control,” said Mitchell. “I really was pretty nervous about getting out there because the car just sounds intimidating and looks almost out of control going through the turns. I was told I looked good out there and everyone was just as surprised as I was on how quickly I got up to speed. Who knows maybe it will lead to something; I’m hoping we could put together a few races to run in the time I have in between some of my pavement races this year.”
The test session was just as useful for Brown as it was for Mitchell to gain experience as he plans to kick off his 2012 season at the Carolina Speedway as part of the 12th Annual Skyler Trull Memorial Carolina Clash super late model event on March 10th. The decision to test Mitchell in his machine is all apart of expanding his Innovative Suspensions company to handle more than just shock and suspension work. The company will now cover chassis setup, chassis repair, body hanging, and crew chief services for its clients.
“I made the decision to move to North Carolina because this is where you want to be if you plan on making it in the motorsports industry. Since I race and am around both dirt and pavement racing I get to know a lot of people in both, so when this opportunity came together about Trey having some interest in dirt racing we made it happen,” stated Brown. “I’ve raced against him in PASS South races so I knew he was a good kid and could drive a racecar plus what was big for me is that he has a good reputation of being easy on equipment. At the end of the day I told him how surprised I was how fast he got up to speed because a lot of guys especially if you’ve been racing pavement won’t sling the car in sideways as hard as it will go and he did that right off. I was pretty impressed really.”
